In 1981, Sergio Zappella and Arthur Schmed founded Saeco with its registered office at Gaggio Montano, a small Apennine town in the province of Bologna.

October 1999 marked the beginning of globalisation of the Group when it acquired the control of Gaggia S.p.A. The acquisition of Gaggia, a historical brand in the professional coffee machines sector, has allowed Saeco to reinforce its position in this market segment and to further increase its sales capacity.

The Group is currently the Italian market leader in the production of espresso coffee machines for home use, with a market share of over 65%. With market share of over 30%, the Group is also the European leader.

In the United Kingdom and Ireland the Saeco products are marketed by by GAGGIA United Kingdom Ltd.
